acne meaning |
These oily glands lubricate the hairs so that they do not dry out. This oily substance is understood as Sebum.
When the glands produce too much sebum, the excess sebum mixes with dead skin cells and and both these substances form a plug in the hair follicle.
- If this plugged follicle is close to the surface of the skin, it'll bulge out creating a 'whitehead'.
- If the plugged follicle is open to the skin, it will create a 'blackhead'.
- Papules, pustules, nodules and cysts occur when harmless bacteria living on the skin, contaminates the plugged follicle.

- Acne can run in the family. If your parents suffered from acne you are likely to suffer too.
- Teenage acne is triggered by increased levels of testosterone during puberty. The sebaceous glands are sensitive to hormones which is why they produce more sebum.
- The first 3 months of pregnancy can cause acne.
- Before or during a period.
- Polycystic ovary syndrome can also be a cause of acne (as well as weight gain)

One of the myths is that our diet will have AN have an effect on on our skin and cause acne. Many doctors believe this is a myth and there is no evidence to support these claims.
I however, do believe it to be true as a result of once I cut out farm and refined sugars, my skin was wanting great!
Over these next few weeks I'm going to be researching this and keeping you all posted with how I get on and what I find. More posts to follow on this subject.
